The Popularity of “Books with Joan”

March 1, 2019

One of the more popular activities at The Saybrook at Haddam is our “Books with Joan” gatherings.  Residents meet up in the second floor Great Room to get comfortable and listen to Joan Szewczyk, longtime member of the activities team at The Saybrook at Haddam, read from books of their choosing.  The group often takes on a theme such as American presidents, composers or travels, and Joan researches the book to read.  Regardless of the topic, residents treasure this time to share a good book together and to discuss it afterwards.  This makes sense as residents are lifelong readers and wonderful conversationalists.

Joan has been reading aloud to residents for several years. She started “Books with Joan” because of her own love of reading and because she had received input from residents that this would be a welcome activity. In truth, she was a little doubtful that the group would take off and was pleasantly surprised when it became a fast favorite.  She also loves the fact that the group is well attended, the discussions are interesting, and everyone gets involved in picking the next book or series.

“Many seniors are able to enjoy reading in their own apartments, but they love the social aspect of participating in our reading club,” Joan said.  “For residents who are struggling with independent reading, our group allows them to hear some new and interesting books.  The best part is that everyone loves to discuss the books after each meeting and after we complete a book or series.  It really is a lot of fun!”

Joan says she was happy that residents stayed on the topic of American presidents for so long, although she worried the biography genre would become a little tiresome.  But the group kept moving from one president to the next and soon they had tackled nearly all of them.  Currently the group is learning about different composers – including contemporary ones such as John Lennon and Paul McCartney from The Beatles.

“When we finished learning about John Lennon, we had a special treat,” Joan said.  “Our maintenance director, Barry, stopped by with his guitar and gave us a private Beatles concert!  The residents had a blast, sharing stories of when their children first brought The Beatles into their homes.  Some like the older Beatles songs best, but everyone appreciated the impact their music had on the culture.”

Reading is well documented as one of the most important ways we learn and live – and regardless of our age, we enjoy many benefits from reading (or being read to).  In the article “Read Me A Story: Importance of Reading Aloud to Elderly People,” author Oksana Dlaboha encourages anyone to read out loud to anyone who no longer can because of age, vision problems, or other issue.

“Listening to reading aloud is a lively intellectual and emotional process,” she said.  “And thinking during reading aloud rebuilds body-mind-spirit needs and offers other benefits as well.” Those include how good readers feel after reading aloud – as he or she has just given a gift to someone – and how great those listening to the story feel. Dlaboha says both the reader and the listener will surely remember this gift long after the book has been closed.

All residents and guests are welcome to join in “Books with Joan.” Please visit the front desk for a schedule of meeting times.

Our Fun Approach to Mealtime

February 15, 2019

This month, The Saybrook at Haddam will celebrate “Jamaica Day,” serving traditional foods and drinks from the island nation, while enjoying Jamaican music, dance and decorations.  This is just one of the fun activities we incorporate each month to make meals at our independent retirement and assisted living community interesting, different and enjoyable.  Other ways include serving traditional holiday meals, preparing seasonal themed dinners, planning outdoor meals, and offering a wide variety of healthy favorites on a daily basis.  Making mealtime social and special is one of the most important things we do to ensure seniors eat well and enjoy the best quality of life possible (without having to shop, cook or clean!).

Families often tell us they worry that their elderly parents or loved ones are not eating enough, are not eating well and consistently, are adding too much salt, or are having other struggles at mealtime.  This is often one of the reasons they begin looking at retirement or assisted living communities.

We know from various studies that people begin to lose their taste buds as they age and their sense of smell changes. These are two major factors that affect eating, and they often lead to a decreased desire to eat or to eat well (adding too much salt or sugar to foods, for instance) – which, of course, can lead to malnutrition, weight loss, and other medical concerns. Even worse, poor diets have been linked to anxiety and depression in elderly people.

In a Clear Care article, Dr. Christine Gerbstadt from the American Dietetic Association and author of The Doctors’ Detox Diet says we don’t know why taste perception declines with normal aging, but we should be cautious to counteract the loss of taste.  She recommends seniors check with their doctor to rule out any medical conditions that are affecting the sense of taste (which may have treatment).

So, to address these downsides of aging, our kitchen team uses fresh ingredients (purchased locally when possible) seasoned with herbs and spices (instead of salt) to create a wide variety of options to please every palate. We also use mealtime as a social time when residents get to know each other, share stories, and avoid the loneliness of eating alone. It is also a time our wellness team can observe the health of a resident and possibly detect other conditions related to loss of appetite.

For seniors who live alone, here are a few suggestions for helping seniors eat right:

  • Limit times they eat alone. Try to arrange times for family members and friends to share meals with seniors and try to bring them to as many family celebrations, potluck dinners, and community meals as possible.
  • Serve foods at the right temperature. Foods simply taste better when served as hot or as cold as the recipe indicates.
  • Flavor foods with herbs, spices, citrus or vinegar. Basil, cilantro, oregano, turmeric, caraway and dill are just a few common herbs that define and enhance countless foods. Citrus juice, citrus zest, or flavored and aged vinegars are wonderful for marinades or dressings.
  • Add variety and introduce new foods. Start with ingredients you know seniors like, then add in different vegetables or flavors to make meals different. Finely chopped vegetables, for instance, can be added to almost any type of filling or sauce.
  • Pay attention to time of day seniors feel hungry. Help seniors get the most nutrition when they have the biggest appetite, whether that is at breakfast, lunch or dinner. If the other meals are smaller, you can worry less that they are not eating well.

We incorporate these suggestions (and more) at daily mealtimes at The Saybrook at Haddam. We know when people eat well, they are happier, more active, more sociable and enjoy a better quality of life.  To us, that is truly the backbone of all our other successes – and is how we achieve gracious retirement living!

Renewing Marriage Vows & Celebrating Life Together

October 15, 2018

Life is full of celebrations and as we age, each happy event becomes more meaningful.  Ceremonies are held for various events that bring family and friends together to share joy and be a part of a larger purpose. Weddings, of course, are one of the most special occasions that we share and now, increasingly, wedding vow renewal ceremonies are taking center state.  After many years of marriage, some bride and grooms are moved to renew their vows to each other and celebrate their enduring love.  At The Saybrook at Haddam, we think this is a wonderful thing to do and so this week we are celebrating weddings and renewing the vows of many couples living at our retirement and assisted living community.

Why renew vows?  This is not a requirement in a couple’s married life, but sometimes the act of a formal renewal gives a marriage a little boost or serves to inspire other people to strive for life-long commitment. After his first marriage renewal ceremony, the Rev. Steve Stockman remarked to the New York Times,“In a world where marriage is fragile and flighty, here were a couple declaring their love after all of these years. It was a moving ceremony and a great testimony to a society that needs to hear this kind of committed love.”

While some renewal ceremonies include a complete reenactment, travel to a destination, or a full-blown reception, ours will be simple.  Couples will gather in our beautiful front lobby, reaffirm the promises they originally made to each other (to be true to each other in good times and in bad, in sickness and in health, to love and honor each other all the days of their lives) and celebrate with great music and some delicious wedding cake.  We appreciate that many residents are sharing photos and other mementos from their wedding day.  It will be a day to make new memories and promises, and to show gratitude towards each other.

We found it interesting that the trend of wedding vow renewals is growing around the country and across religions. Rabbi Naftali Silberberg from the Rohr Jewish Learning Institute says marriage renewals can serve a valuable purpose and perhaps should be done more frequently. He explains that in the Jewish faith, a marriage is actually renewed at every moment, so a “renewal” is really more of a celebration of how the relationship has grown and matured, and how a couple’s appreciation for each other has blossomed and flourished.  In this light, he says, a renewal could be a “time to recommit to each other, this time with more feeling, with more profound devotion—it is time to actively resolve to take the relationship to the next level.”

At The Saybrook at Haddam, we agree and we are ready to celebrate just that!

Mother’s Day Every Day at The Saybrook at Haddam

May 16, 2018

Mother’s Day was this past Sunday – although The Saybrook at Haddam will be celebrating next week, on Monday, May 21.  We decided to host our special gathering at this later date so we did not interfere with other Mother’s Day events families planned for the moms, grandmothers and great-grandmothers at our community. Plus, no one seems to mind extending this holiday a little longer! We were looking over some articles on “great Mother’s Day gifts,” and it struck us that many of the suggested gifts are part of our daily life here at The Saybrook at Haddam.

For instance, caring.com suggested brain teasers as great gifts for grandmothers – and each day, we offer group activities including word and number puzzles designed to “exercise our brains.” They also suggested taking grandmother to have her hair and nails done at a salon – which is something residents can conveniently do here at our in-house beauty salon.  And, they thought sending a healthy meal through a mail-order company was great – and we serve healthy meals here three times a day every day of the week.

For the grandmother who continues to enjoy cooking and baking, Good Housekeeping thought gifts such as measuring spoons or cookware were the way to go this year.  The moms and grandmothers at The Saybrook at Haddam know our Country Kitchen is fully stocked and ready for them to use when the mood strikes. So instead, we suggest the best kitchen-themed gift is time shared mixing and baking together with family or friends (something we do quite often here).

Flowers are always a popular gift and we know residents loved receiving some this past Mother’s Day (and many shared them with the rest of the community).  We regularly decorate our dining room and gathering spaces with flowers to bring cheer and brighten our days.  Now that the weather is warming, our many gardens are starting to bud and sprout (one of the greatest gifts from nature) – which we enjoy inside and out.  Additionally, we offer a year-round program called “People-Plant Connection” that helps residents best maintain their own houseplants or container gardens.

We are an inquisitive group at The Saybrook at Haddam and many residents love receiving books or audio books as gifts.  Residents like to pass these along so others in the community can borrow and enjoy them.  We keep several well-stocked sharing libraries for residents to discover new books to read in their private apartments or in one of our many “reading nooks.” We also host author readings, book discussions, and educational outings to really encourage the life-long learning spirit.

Recently in the Baltimore Sun, writer Peggy Rowe lamented that the most popular Mother’s Day gifts were flowers, apparel and gift cards. “How could we get it so wrong?” she asks in her humorous article about giving the greatest of all Mother’s Day gifts: time and patience. We couldn’t agree more!

Additionally, we find it inspiring that Mother’s Day began as far back as the 1850s and, early on, included “Friendship Day” picnics to help reunite Union and Confederate loyalists after the end of the Civil War.  The whole “holiday” was meant to bring people together, strengthen American families, and improve conditions for children and families – which really are the most important gifts of all.

Food for Thought About Discussing Retirement Living

July 14, 2017

Oftentimes, Americans think of retirement as a financial (“savings”) issue – and it is.  However, as in any stage of life, the purpose of savings is to give you options – and for seniors, that means options in housing, lifestyle, healthcare, and overall quality of life.  Just like people benefit from saving for retirement early in life, people will benefit from thinking about where and how they would like to live during retirement as early as possible. Why Seniors Need to Think About Legal and Financial Planning

June 16, 2017

Seniors may no longer be dealing with the stresses of raising a family, or working in a challenging job, or meeting other obligations they had when they were younger.  However, they still have to handle important day-to-day and long-term financial issues and should stay on top of their legal documents.  Tax and inheritance laws sometimes change, Medicaid and Social Security benefits are often revised, and a senior’s health or personal life may change – all of which could affect their legal and financial situation. Taking a Closer Look at “Senior Solutions”

May 17, 2017

Many adult “children” find themselves involved in their parents’ retirement living planning.  Sometimes parents have saved money for retirement but haven’t given thought to where they want to live or how they will receive necessary support.  Other parents are a little behind with savings but have a solid idea of where they want to be and how they want to live.  Still others have done neither and suddenly are faced with an illness or other life change that is forcing them to think seriously about senior living options. Pets and Seniors – What a Perfect Mix!

April 14, 2017

There are many things to smile about at The Saybrook at Haddam, but the biggest smiles always appear when a four-legged furry friend is around.  We have several pets who call The Saybrook at Haddam “home” and we have regular animal visitors who brighten our days on so many levels.  You may have taken a Tai Chi class with Shasta, the visiting German Shepard, or spent time with Higgins, the spotted terrier, when he stops by to say hello.  Or you may have seen several resident dog-owners such as Angelo walking his cocker spaniel, Abby, or Hans and Heidi with their hound mix, Annie, or Janet with her little black cutie, Callie.  You already may even have met Skippy, the golden retriever that belongs to Kay and Charlie, two new residents.  And over in the cat department, you perhaps have seen Phyllis’s cat, Francie, who was the star of a recent advertisement from The Saybrook at Haddam, or Harry’s cat, Missy, or Barbara’s biblical friends, Adam and Eve.  These adorable pets are an important part of our community and we love having them around. Going Red for Heart Health in February

February 15, 2017

Ah, the heart.  It is truly what makes us who we are – and what carries us through our lives (literally and figuratively).  Expectant parents jump for joy upon hearing that first tiny heartbeat in the womb. Many happy romances begin with the rapid beating of the heart. Major life decisions are often judged by listening to the heart (and, of course, the head!). Therefore, it makes sense that we must, in turn, love and care for our hearts. Continue reading “Going Red for Heart Health in February”

Hitting the Road with Seniors

January 27, 2017

The Saybrook at Haddam’s weekly activity calendar is full of daily social, physical and cultural events that take place throughout our retirement community.   We are so fortunate to have a wide range of exceptional instructors and performers visit us regularly.  However, we are also fortunate to be located in a very beautiful and culturally rich part of the state – one that offers fabulous theaters, museums, libraries, restaurants, galleries, public parks, and more – so we like to plan trips and adventures away from home, too.
