Thoughts from our Safe Harbor Memory Care Neighborhood

October 30, 2017

Living with Alzheimer’s, dementia or other memory-related illness means new and different struggles occur each day.  There is no standardized solution for treating or managing memory care, since these diseases affect each person so differently.  So, when The Saybrook at Haddam set out to create Safe Harbor, a unique and therapeutic memory care neighborhood, we knew customized, individualized care would be at the heart of all we do.

The Safe Harbor team has carefully created a daily living program that is highly respectful of each resident – and that is revised regularly to respond to changes that can occur any time. Residents thrive in our warm and welcoming environment that includes many areas for large and small group activities, as well as for quiet conversations.  Our daily activities encourage socialization and participation (including with assisted living and independent residents), and we place a strong emphasis on nutrition, hydration, and overall wellness.

Mitchell farms visitTo keep our days interesting, we take memory care residents on trips to local places such as museums, libraries, restaurants, and concert halls.  Sometimes, we simply enjoy a scenic ride through Haddam, along the Connecticut River and shoreline, and over to the east side of the river to look at foliage, horse farms, rocky beaches, and the natural beauty of our state.

We work closely with families and caregivers of those suffering from Alzheimer’s, dementia or other memory-related illnesses to help them enjoy quality time with their loves ones. To that end, we always welcome guests anytime for a visit or to participate in activities, and we host special “family game nights” and themed meals (such as “build your own burger night”).

alzheimers walkWe also work to support memory care education, research, outreach and awareness.  Recently, The Saybrook at Haddam participated in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s, raising close to $2,000 for the Alzheimer’s Association.  This was our first year participating in such an event and we were so pleased with the response and enthusiasm of everyone who supported our team of walkers.  We also work with the Alzheimer’s Association and other local memory care experts to share information with families of residents as well as the larger community through support groups and other events such as our ongoing “Seniors Solutions” seminars.  (Click here for details on our next “Seniors Solutions” program which will be held Nov. 1 and Nov 15.) We are dedicated to helping families and caregivers understand these diseases and best meet the needs of those suffering from them.

dementia treeWe will forever be adapting and modifying our own Safe Harbor memory care program based on the real needs of each person who comes to live at The Saybrook at Haddam.  This “holistic” approach to memory care is exciting to us as developments and improvements are constantly being made through dementia research, education, and awareness – and we welcome the challenge!
