Many adult “children” find themselves involved in their parents’ retirement living planning. Sometimes parents have saved money for retirement but haven’t given thought to where they want to live or how they will receive necessary support. Other parents are a little behind with savings but have a solid idea of where they want to be and how they want to live. Still others have done neither and suddenly are faced with an illness or other life change that is forcing them to think seriously about senior living options.
Every day we talk with senior citizens and adult children who are in various stages of planning for retirement living. Some seniors are still trying to manage living alone in their home or condo and their children are starting to worry about the burdens and loneliness. Some have moved in with a relative but the arrangement is not working out. Some seniors are not quite ready for a retirement community but are simply doing research to understand their options.
Based on our contact with these families, we thought there was a need for an in-depth educational program that really explained how to prepare, why to prepare, what the options are, and what seniors should be concerned about. So, we teamed up with some local experts to create a free “Senior Solutions” seminar series that covered some of these topics.
The first event focused on “Proactive vs. Crisis Planning” and discussed benefits of thinking about retirement options as early as possible. We also talked about managing plans through a crisis so the best interest of each person is always kept up front and center.
The next program – which will be on May 31 at 5:30 p.m. – covers “Savings for Retirement and Funding Long-Term Care.” We have assembled a panel of financial and insurance experts who will discuss the why, when and how about having the right coverage and funding in place.
The final event in this series – which will be on June 22 at 5:30 p.m. – will be on “Effective Legal and Financial Planning” which covers necessary topics many families might not be considering, or simply prefer to avoid. We believe thinking about these issues now is important so everyone is on the same page regarding the senior years.
We know retirement can and should be a wonderful and fulfilling time for seniors (and stress-free for their adult children). Retirement communities in general offer an active and engaged environment filled with friendship, care, and treasured peace of mind. When seniors make the choice to move in to The Saybrook at Haddam, we welcome them into our “family” and encourage them to participate in the countless social, cultural, educational, physical and fun events and activities we offer daily. We also provide nutritional and delicious meals and an exceptional wellness program that is individualized for each resident. We believe they are worth it (and worth planning for it)!
We hope to see you at one of these upcoming “Senior Solutions” seminars – and welcome you to stop in and visit our gracious retirement community any time!
