As state and national economic news continues to follow the path of a rollercoaster, The Saybrook at Haddam has managed to carve out a steady and reliable performance. The 108-apartment, independent retirement and assisted living community has held an occupancy rate close to 95 percent for several years (even reaching 100 percent in 2014), and its newly expanded memory care unit, Safe Harbor, has become one of the region’s most sought after solutions for those suffering from Alzheimer’s, dementia or other memory-related disorders. Now, with the completion of a 15,000 square-foot expansion project which added 24 apartments to the community (primarily in Safe Harbor), The Saybrook at Haddam is poised to continue to be a bright spot in a tough economy.
The management team, which has been in place since 2009 when the occupancy rate was less than 18 percent, credits this success to its skilled and dedicated staff, its diverse range of services, and its attention to ensuring a high quality of life and truly personalized care. Kathy Ryan, executive director, and Dave Downey, director of marketing and
community relations, led the effort to add staff and services, make needed upgrades, and become established as a serious player in this competitive market.
“Over the years, our entire team has worked to develop a culture of kindness, caring and good humor, which benefits every resident and has added to our success,” Ryan said. “Since we haven’t waivered from this focus, we have been able to grow and thrive even in today’s unpredictable and difficult economy. The most rewarding part, however, is that our success has allowed us to support so many wonderful families in our local area as they face the crucial task of finding the best care for their loved ones.”
The Saybrook at Haddam is ensuring future success through its specialized Safe Harbor Memory Care neighborhood. This newly expanded area within the community now includes an enlarged dining room, a fully enclosed courtyard with walking paths and patio furniture, spaces for conversations and socializing, and a stunning great room that overlooks the courtyard. The community kept its unique village-inspired décor which replicates walking down a small village street, helping create a cozy, inviting and comforting environment for residents and guests.
